Like doing và like to do nhìn thì như nhau, nhưng người Anh dùng chúng cho hai ý khác hẳn. Bài C44 đặt chúng vào một cuộc tranh luận nảy lửa về các cuộc thi hoa hậu — nơi người thì thích xem, người thì cho rằng không nên có.

We have seen all the contestants in the bathing costumes and in the evening dresses, and the judges have selected our six finalists. The stage is the interview, and in this stage the contestants will be judged on charm, intelligence and personality.
Announcer: Our six finalists are No 14, Miss Lancashire, No 13, Miss Dorset, Miss Norfolk No 50, Miss Gwent No 6, No 30 Miss Strathclyde and Miss Warwickshire No 40. Would the first contestant please come forward.
Announcer: This is 17-year-old Grace Field from Lancashire. Just stand there, Grace. You’re a shop-assistant, aren’t you?
Grace Field: Yes, I am.
Announcer: What kind of shop is it?
Grace Field: It’s a clothes shop. We sell children’s clothes. It’s only a temporary job, actually.
Announcer: Now, first of all: what do you do in your spare time?
Grace Field: Well, I like dressmaking. I make all my own clothes… and cooking. I do a lot of cooking.
Announcer: That’s a beautiful dress you’re wearing, did you make it?

Lỗi thường gặp

Một — Dùng would like + V-ing. Would like luôn đi với to V: I’d like to go. Chỉ like đứng một mình mới dùng được cả hai dạng.

Hai — Nhầm tính từ -ing với -ed. -ing tả thứ gây ra cảm giác (an irritating programme); -ed tả người nhận cảm giác (I feel irritated). Nói I am irritating là tự nhận mình gây khó chịu.

Ba — Coi like doing và like to do là một. Trong tiếng Anh–Anh, like doing là thích tận hưởng, còn like to do là thấy nên làm. Người Mỹ gộp hai nghĩa vào like to do.

Bốn — Nhầm contestant với contest. Contest là cuộc thi, contestant là người dự thi. Tương tự compete – competitor – competition.
